What the ticket covers

The booking sells entry to the Chaoyang Theatre acrobatic show, a 60-minute Chinese acrobatics performance with no spoken dialogue. It also lists hotel pick-up and drop-off as included, which the theatre's ticket agency describes on its own site as an optional, one-way service, so it helps to know what you are actually getting. Start times appear once you choose a date. Infants under one go free but don't take a seat. Check which theatre your confirmation names

Ticket sites for Beijing acrobatics use similar names, so check yours. The booking page's title and address name the Chaoyang Theatre, 36 East Third Ring Road North, Chaoyang District (朝阳区东三环北路36号). The web address of that page, though, still contains the words red-theater, and Beijing has a separate Red Theatre, which its own site places in the Temple of Heaven area. When the operator messages you your ticket, make sure it names the Chaoyang Theatre and the Hujialou address. If it names anything else, ask the operator before you leave your hotel, not at the door.

GetYourGuide or the agency's own site?

The same show can be booked two ways. The GetYourGuide booking is in your own currency, can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead, and lets you reserve now and pay later. A Beijing ticket agency also sells the show on its own site, chaoyang-theatre.com, where you choose a seat area, pay when you book, and collect your ticket at the box office with your booking name. Terms differ by seller, including cancellation cut-offs and what the pick-up covers, so read the terms of the one you book rather than assuming they match.

How the ticket reaches you

After you book, the QR code in your confirmation is not your ticket. The operator sends the actual ticket by WhatsApp, WeChat or iMessage on the morning of your show date, so give a contact they can reach and make sure that app works on your phone in China. Check your messages that morning. If nothing arrives, contact the operator through your booking before you set off. On the agency's own site the process is different: you give your booking name at the theatre box office instead.

A short checklist for the night

Once you have booked, a few checks save trouble on the evening. Confirm the venue name and address in the operator's message. Save the Chinese name and address on your phone, so a taxi driver can read them. Check that your messaging app is working. Look at the start time on your confirmation, because times follow the season. If your booking includes pick-up, confirm the details with the operator. And leave in good time: the ticket agency recommends arriving at least 20 to 30 minutes before the start.

Choosing a seat

The agency's own site sells seat areas, from balcony and sides to centre rows and VIP rows, and the cost differs by area. The theatre has lower and upper seating areas. On the GetYourGuide booking, a seating chart is among the photos, and the page asks you to check where your seats are. One reviewer called the venue a small theater and said side seats a few rows back gave a great view for less than centre orchestra. That is one opinion, not a rule, so look at the chart for your own date before you choose.

Hotel pick-up: what to confirm

The GetYourGuide booking lists hotel pick-up and drop-off as included. The agency's own site describes its pick-up as one-way, says the return is not included, and excludes hotels in airport or remote areas. Those may not be the same product, so don't assume either way. After booking, ask the operator three things: whether your hotel is covered, how you will be told the pick-up details, and how you get back. Acrobatics, kung fu or opera?

Visitors often search for a kung fu show in Beijing. The Legend of Kung Fu show at the Red Theatre is shown as ended on the Chaoyang ticket agency's site, so treat any listing for it with care and check the date. The same agency lists a Peking Opera show at the Liyuan Theatre, with English subtitles beside the stage. The Chaoyang show has no spoken dialogue, so there is nothing to translate: it is a run of separate physical acts rather than a story, and the choice depends on whether you want skill or plot.

Cancelling and changing plans

A booking made through GetYourGuide can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before the show for a full refund, and with reserve now and pay later you pay nothing at booking. The agency's own site sets its own cut-off for refunds and date changes, and its pages quote more than one figure, so ask it directly before you pay. Either way, confirm your date and your pick-up details soon after booking. The venue fills up fast, so changing plans late can leave you with fewer dates to choose from.

Who this isn't for

If you want a story with dialogue, a Peking Opera show with subtitles suits better. If you can't be reached by WhatsApp, WeChat or iMessage on the day, the GetYourGuide ticket is awkward, because the real ticket arrives that way, and the agency's box-office route may suit you more. If you need step-free access inside the theatre, none of the pages we read says what it offers, so ask the operator first.
